June
15, 2005 the exhibition of the "Arpillera project"
That I have been working for the past 8 weeks with about
30 women in our Community, Arpillera is a traditional
tapestry that depicts life stories.
WHAT ARE ARPILLERAS?
The dictionary meaning of "Arpillera" is "sackcloth
or burlap".
Frequently, a common theme is selected by the group, then
an Arpillera is designed and executed by each woman, and
on occasion all of the Arpilleras with a similar theme
are sewn together to form a large mural. On a twelve by
eighteen inch piece of burlap, colourful fabric scraps
are cut into shapes and arranged to tell a story. The
finished Arpillera is then framed by bright wool crocheted
border.
